ACTUN AHL & ACTUN CHAPAT

FIRST TIME CAVING!
May 25, 2011

The day after I slept at Cahal Pech for the first night the class got geared up to go visit some caves! The first cave is called Actun which means "Cave" Ahl which means "Dart" named after Mr. Dart who owns the cave. This first cave was more like a rock shelter. It was a perfect example of Mayan cave art. My Professor, Cameron, had been studying and researching this rock shelter for a number of years. It was amazing to see how much art can be found here as well as speculating the many uses this place could have provided to the Maya.
The Class before we headed out to Actun Ahl & Actun Chapat

After this cave we hiked through the jungle until we reached Actuan "Cave" Chapat "Centipede". This cave was enormous! It was very beautiful, and an amazing experience to begin to understand the great signifcance this cave once held for many Maya people.
